Hells of Beppu
The Hells of Beppu, known as "Jigoku" in Japanese, are a series of eight spectacular hot springs located in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan. These natural wonders are famous for their unique characteristics and vibrant colors, earning them the dramatic name "hells" due to their intense heat and otherworldly appearance.
Each of the eight hells has its own distinct features:
- Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell): Known for its cobalt blue water.
- Oniishibozu Jigoku: Features bubbling mud pools that resemble monks' shaven heads.
- Kamado Jigoku (Cooking Pot Hell): Named for its shape resembling a cooking pot.
- Oniyama Jigoku (Monster Mountain Hell): Home to crocodiles that thrive in the warm waters.
- Shiraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell): Characterized by its milky blue-white water.
- Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell): Famous for its red-colored water due to iron oxide.
- Tatsumaki Jigoku (Spout Hell): Features a geyser that erupts every 30-40 minutes.
- Yama Jigoku (Mountain Hell): Showcases a variety of small ponds and a mini zoo.
These hot springs are primarily for viewing rather than bathing due to their extremely high temperatures, often reaching over 100°C (212°F). The Hells of Beppu are a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors to witness their unique beauty and geological significance. The area around Beppu is known for its geothermal activity, making it one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts.
