Hirayu Onsen
Hirayu Onsen is the oldest and largest of the five hot spring towns in the Okuhida Onsen area of Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It is located at the foot of the Northern Japan Alps and is known for its scenic outdoor hot springs (rotemburo) with views of the surrounding mountains.
The hot springs were discovered in the 1560s by Takeda Shingen's troops as they crossed through the region. The town has many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) ranging from small family-run places to large complexes. Its hot spring waters are said to cure neuralgia, sensitivity to cold and skin disease.
Visiting Hirayu Onsen
Hirayu Onsen is a popular day trip destination from Takayama, with easy access by bus taking about 1 hour from JR Takayama Station. Many of the ryokans and public bath houses open their baths to non-staying guests during the day for a fee. The town is also home to the Hirayu Minzokukan (Folk Museum) and the Hirayu-no-Yu public bath facility.
