Ikaho Onsen
Ikaho Onsen (伊香保温泉) is a historic hot spring town located on the eastern slopes of Mount Haruna in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its reddish-brown, iron-laden thermal waters, which come in two varieties: "golden water" and "silver water".
The Town and Its History
The town centers around a picturesque 300-meter long stone staircase lined with ryokans, shops, and restaurants, creating a cozy, nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the Showa Period (1926-1989). Climbing the 365 steps to the top is considered a "power spot" that can improve one's fortunes.
Ikaho Onsen has a long history dating back to around 759 CE, when it was mentioned in the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest surviving collection of poems. The town became a center for rest and recuperation during the Warring States period in the late 16th century.
Modern Attractions
Today, Ikaho Onsen is a popular destination for its rejuvenating baths, seasonal scenery, and local attractions like shrines, museums, and shops selling the town's famous onsen manju confections.
