Shirahone Onsen
Shirahone Onsen is a small hot spring town located in the Northern Japan Alps, within Chubusangaku National Park. It is known for its milky white mineral waters, which are believed to have therapeutic properties.
Features
- The town consists of around a dozen ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) situated along the slopes of a steep valley.
- Many of these inns open their baths to day-trip visitors during the day.
- There is also one public bath in the town.
Mineral Water
- The milky white color of the water comes from the high mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium, which is thought to be beneficial for gastrointestinal ailments.
- Visitors are encouraged to drink the water, which is served from bamboo spouts around the town.
History
- Shirahone Onsen has a long history, with local historians believing the hot springs have been in use since the Kamakura period (1185-1333) when samurai warriors would stop to soak there.
- The town itself dates back around four centuries.
Surroundings
- In addition to the hot springs, Shirahone Onsen is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, including the nearby Ryujin no Taki waterfall.
- It makes for a peaceful, therapeutic getaway in the mountains.
