Tsubame Onsen

Tsubame Onsen is a famous natural hot spring (onsen) village located in the mountains of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It is situated at an elevation of around 1,000 meters, surrounded by the forests of Myoko Togakushi Renzan National Park and enclosed by Mount Myoko.

The Hot Springs

The village is known for its traditional ryokans (inns) and the natural outdoor hot spring baths of Kawara-no-yu and Ogon-no-yu, which are free to use and maintained by the local townspeople. The baths are located a 15-minute hike from the village and are tattoo-friendly.

The onsen waters are rich in minerals like sulfur, sulfate, and chloride, which are believed to have healing properties for conditions like rheumatism, neuralgia, and skin ailments. The waters are naturally off-white or milky in color due to the mineral content.

Seasonal Attractions

Tsubame Onsen is a popular destination in winter when the area is blanketed in snow. The path to the outdoor baths is closed from December to June due to heavy snowfall. Visitors can also take a bus tour to sample the distinctive spring waters of six other nearby onsen towns.
