Yamashiro Onsen

Yamashiro Onsen is a traditional hot spring resort town located in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the four hot spring towns that make up the Kaga Onsen area.

History and Features

The town is known for its historic public bath houses, the Soyu and Ko-Soyu, located in the center of town. The Ko-Soyu is a unique bath house rebuilt in the style of its Meiji Period appearance, with a rest area on the second floor. Both bath houses are adorned with decorative Kutani pottery tiles.

Yamashiro Onsen has a rich history, with the hot spring waters first discovered over 1,300 years ago by the monk Gyoki during his pilgrimage to nearby Mount Hakusan. The town gradually grew around the Ko-Soyu public bath house.

Modern Experience

Today, visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of old Japan by staying in a traditional ryokan inn and soaking in the historic public baths. The town is also known for its Kutani pottery, with the Ancient Kutani Kiln Exhibition Center displaying antique and modern works.

Yamashiro Onsen serves as a great base to explore the surrounding Kaga region, with famous sightseeing areas like Kenrokuen Garden and Eiheiji Temple nearby. It can be accessed by bus from Kaga Onsen Station.
